WATCH: Raw sewage gushes into Mzimkhulu River
The Mzimkhulu river reeks of raw sewage near Port Shepstone.

FOR the past three days, raw sewage has being flowing out of a pump station on the Sugar Mill Road, Lower Albersville and into the Mzimkhulu river.
This, hot on the heels of the contamination of the Uvongo river and lagoon which apparently left hundreds of holidaymakers ill in December.

It is believed that the spillage has been triggered by cable theft. A motorist said,”It is a potential environmental disaster and I was absolutely horrified. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Why wasn’t this problem solved the same day?” he asked.
Ugu employees are working on the problem.
In December a local fisherman spotted raw sewage flowing into the Mzimkhulu river. “Over the years thousands upon thousands of litres of sewage have flowed into the river, which means the ‘home of all rivers’ which is renowned for its beauty and wealth of wildlife and plants, is being contaminated,” he said.

A statement is awaited from Ugu District Municipality.
