Cemetery and drownings under the spotlight

Town halls and cemetery maintenance plans are also being addressed, especially after a memorial wall was trashed by vandals some months ago.

DROWNINGS are top of mind with Umdoni councillors at the moment, all united in their concern about how to save lives.

The Mail reporter found this first meeting of the year last Wednesday to be a breath of fresh air with everyone vowing to find solutions to problems and focus on cutting out the negatives.

Drownings at Sezela and Scottburgh beaches were a concern and preventative measures are now being put in place after the beach manager gave a full report.

The removal of shark nets in some areas was also questioned. Council has also taken note of upcoming events and pros and cons are being considered.

Overgrown grass and verges on vacant property or around homes in general are also to receive attention.

Councillors agreed that this lowered the community’s standards in the eyes of tourists and also acted as hideouts for criminals. The council is in the process of contacting contractors to schedule maintenance routines.

The plan is to have a more systematic approach and keep community members updated with the schedule.

Several other matters were addressed and, for once, all ran smoothly. Long may this last.
