Sewage contaminates Mzimkhulu River yet again as Ugu says ‘system was blocked by foreign objects’

The foreign objects included a two-litre plastic bottle and clothing.

YET another raw sewage spill has stirred up a stink along the Mzimkhulu River, and this time the spill was left to flow into the river for hours.

Five weeks ago the Herald reported on the same problem.

The previous leak was believed to be caused by cable theft but Ugu officials claimed the overflow from the pump station was caused by foreign objects.

They were also adamant that last week’s spillage onto the road and into the river was caused by foreign objects.

“There was indeed a sewage spill on Sugar Mill Road last week. This was detected by the municipality in the morning and was attended to immediately.

“Technicians found the system was blocked by foreign objects which included a two-litre plastic bottle and clothing material,” said Ugu spokesman France Zama.

The leak was in fact reported to Ugu by the Herald, and not detected by the municipality.

The municipality urged the community to refrain from depositing foreign objects into the system as this causes the system to become vulnerable and not perform correctly.

According to a resident, he has had enough of Ugu’s call centre. “I called several times and no one picked up. We as residents, have given up on reporting burst pipes and sewage leaks. There seems to be a ‘don’t care’ attitude from the call centre and from technicians when repairing leaks. Often we see them just drive past and they don’t give a damn. Let the environment get messed up – we don’t care any more,” he said angrily.
