Scottburgh’s dead not left to rest in peace as vandals strike again
Sex, drugs and looting are rife at the Scottburgh cemetery.
IT was with horror that Durban resident, Kevin Carolan, discovered on Thursday last week that a memorial at the Scottburgh Cemetery containing the ashes of his mother, father and brother had been destroyed.
Devastated, he told the Mail that he had visited the cemetery six months ago when he noticed a decline in the maintenance of the cemetery, with various memorial stones having been vandalised.

Mr Carolan initially suspected that local authorities were oblivious to the situation. However, after a cursory glance at past reports in the Mail on this very problem, he had only one question: “Why is nothing being done?”

He said he would have to inform his sister-in-law that her husband’s memorial stone had been destroyed.
Sadly, we didn’t have an answer.
A follow-up visit was then conducted with Mr Carolan present and it was discovered then that the situation had not changed at all since December last year, when things had really taken a turn for the worse.

Horrifyingly, looters, drug users and vagrants no longer seem to be the only problem. Empty condom packets were much in evidence, suggesting that sexual encounters had also taken place at the cemetery.
Claims are that vandals raid the cemetery at night in the hopes of finding precious items which could be sold in order to purchase drugs and alcohol.

Last year during the December investigation into the vandalised wall of remembrance, a local woman insisted, while in talks with Umdoni Head of Community Services, Pooven Pillay, that security measures be implemented to ensure that such incidents never occurred again.

It however is evident that nothing has since been done to rectify the matter.
Umdoni Municipality has to date not provided feedback.
