Schools invited to learn more about careers in construction

A career in the construction industry is challenging and fulfilling work.

PUPILS from two local schools, Port Shepstone Secondary and Nombuso High were recently invited by members of the Master Builders’ Association (MBA) and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to a careers day on construction.

They were given a talk by MBA training manager Victor Smith on why the construction industry is a fulfilling job and how it is a very necessary job that benefits society.

“It’s hard work, but it’s honest work. Not only do you get the immediate satisfaction of seeing a job well done, but you can also find satisfaction knowing that the work you do today can be enjoyed for generations to follow,” he said.

He added that construction is one of the largest industries in the country.

“There is always a need to build and remodel homes, commercial buildings, and roads that exist throughout the country.” He also  pointed out that the construction industry is constantly evolving.

Mr Smith reiterated that there’s no ‘one way’ to get into construction.

“It doesn’t matter what point you’re currently at in your life, maybe you’re still in high school, maybe you’ve already completed a degree, or perhaps you’re looking for a second career – anytime is a good time to get started in the industry.”

He reminded pupils that once they’ve discovered what interests them, they should call up local construction companies and see if they can tour a job site.
