Sewage spills into Port Edward estuary as Ugu seeks funding to replace pipes

And so the water problems continue.

UGU District Municipality has confirmed that it had dealt with recent sewage spills into the Port Edward estuary.

However, it was currently sourcing funds to replace the district’s most troublesome sewerage pipes, according to spokesman Sphelele Cele.

She was responding to a report from a Port Edward resident that sewage had twice contaminated the Port Edward estuary last week.

Ugu had been informed about the two sewage spillages, on Wednesday and Friday last week.

These had been attended to on the days of the spills and clean-up processes had been conducted, she said.

The spillages had been a result of pipe failure in the rising main on Pump Station No Two in Boundary Road, Port Edward.

Ms Cele assured residents that the municipality was currently working on plans to replace the aged sewerage infrastructure in the most problematic areas and was now sourcing funds for the replacement programme. It would commence as soon as the funds were available.
