Oshabeni protesters take to the streets to vent their anger over crime wave which left at least five dead

Angry protesters burnt tyres and blockaded the road.

ANGRY Oshabeni community members have taken their concerns to the streets.

The crowd set tyres alight and blocked the Oshabeni road today (Monday), to express their dissatisfaction with worsening crime levels in the area.

“Enough is enough!” shouted protesters during the march.

Law enforcement officers monitor the situation.

According to one of the protesters, a criminal element has been terrorising the community recently,  resulting in more than five deaths being reported.

“We are tired of living in fear, we have no idea when these people will strike,” they said.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid has confirmed the incident.

Some 2 000 people are reported to have attended the march to express their concerns, which also included insufficient resources at the local police station.

“Police from the K9 unit, Mehlomnyama, POP and uniform members from neighbouring stations were deployed to a sports ground in the area where a memorandum will be handed over to cluster commander, Major General Sethenye Nxamagele,” added Lt-Col Wiid.

Police and law enforcement are monitoring the situation closely.
