Cold and cramping kayak fisherman rescued off Umtentweni by NSRI

The man required assistance after becoming hypothermic.

A FISHERMAN on a kayak off Umtentweni requested assistance from NSRI Shelly Beach recently.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Shelly Beach duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn to assist the fisherman.

Jeremiah Jackson, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, said they found the man and his fishing partner had drifted to offshore from Southport.

The 38-year-old Durban fisherman had fallen into the water numerous times and, despite being able to get back onto his fishing kayak each time, had grown cold, become hypothermic and was cramping and could no longer get back to shore.

The second man was not injured and was able to paddle to shore without assistance, where he raised the alarm.

Once the man’s body temperature had returned to normal, he required no further assistance.
