THE second and final schools’ volleyball KO tournament, held at the Marburg Volleyball Complex last Saturday saw overwhelming favourites Port Shepstone Secondary take the composite trophy for the top high school, while Griffendore from Harding topped the final championship log in the primary schools’ section, with Jai Hind emerging second.

Sheppie Secondary put daylight in the final championship log between themselves and arch rivals Marsec by winning the boys’ U16 and the prestigious boys’ O16 divisions, despite not featuring in any of the girls’ finals.
Pre-tournament favourite in the boys’ open division (over 16), Kwafica, was stunned by the unpredictable Marsec and failed to reach the finals for the first time in three years.

Marsec O16 boys capitulated to Sheppie Secondary in the finals, thereby losing any hope of snatching the composite high school championship from a rampant Sheppie Secondary.
Marsec girls’ O16 nevertheless restored some pride by winning against a gallant Merlewood Secondary, which made a welcome return to volleyball after almost two years of non-participation.
Merlewood Secondary girls’ U16 avenged their senior girls’ defeat, by outplaying Marsec in the girls’ U16 division.
The primary schools’ section was a much closer affair, with just two final championship points separating winning school Griffendore and second placed Jai Hind. In the boys’ U11 division, Griffendore defeated former champion school RA Engar in the finals, while Marburg Primary had the better of a brave Jai Hind in the girls’ U11 section, with the dreaded points quotient separating second placed teams.
The hotly contested boys’ U13 section once again saw group A semi-finalists, Jai Hind and Griffendore, battle it out in the finals. Jai Hind was not going to be overwhelmed by the high-flying Griffendore.
In a war of attrition, the lads from Jai Hind eventually wore out their opponents to take a well-deserved victory.
The girls’ U13 division was most unpredictable with early group winners, Jai Hind, losing in the semis, while Hlanganani took advantage of the opportunity by condemning Griffendore to a stunning defeat in the finals.
Griffendore’s contestation of three of the four primary school divisional finals, resulted in them securing critical log points even if they lost and this paved the way towards winning the composite primary school volleyball championship in the second KO.
