WATCH: Better luck next year Margate! #TOTY2017

The seaside town unfortunately didn't make it into the top three.

MARGATE sadly didn’t scoop the title of Kwela ‘Dorp van die Jaar’ last night.

The lucky winner was Mossel Bay, followed by Nelspruit and Barkly East respectively.

The annual competition for South Africa’s best towns started in February/March this year.

Margate was last month announced as a KwaZulu-Natal semi-finalist, along with Richards Bay and Vryheid.

Corrie Wernick, from the Margate Business Association, was the driving force behind getting Margate in the semi-finalist category.

She showed great passion for the task and displayed much faith in the town

However, speaking to the Herald earlier today, she said she was hugely disappointed.

I tried my very best but we needed the votes, and we didn’t have enough of them. It was all about the votes!

“Margate needed this win, but as a community we didn’t pull together,” she added.

She said Mossel Bay’s win was very well-deserved with a lot of hard work going having taken place.

Mossel Bay had the full support of its Mayor Harry Joseph Levendal, who even drummed up support by visiting schools to promote the town.

Councillor Dave Watson thanked Corrie and her huge support group for giving it a good go.

He also thanked all those who voted and encouraged others to vote.

“Your vote for a better future inspires us to do more, do better and achieve our town’s aims,” said Councillor Watson on Facebook.
