WATCH: South Coast community ‘lifts and loads’ for those affected by the fires in Knysna

It's been quite astonishing to see how people have rallied for those in need.

IT’S been absolutely incredible to witness how the South Coast community has pulled together to help those affected by the Knysna fire this week.

The project, spearheaded by the Port Shepstone Lions, has seen an ‘overwhelming’ flood of donations from the community which has kept the Lions ‘lifting and loading’ for the last couple of days.

On Monday morning members of the Lions and the public were seen carrying and loading bags of donated items into vehicles at JTV Centre in Umtentweni and C-Side Gas in Margate which was then transported to the Port Shepstone Lions clubhouse, and then loaded later that day onto a five-ton truck and a bakkie and trailer headed for Knysna.

On Tuesday, the Lions loaded a second trailer filled to the brim with donations for Knysna.

When news of the fires in Knysna was released, Lions Clubs from all over Southern Africa, and the even the world responded.

In a matter of minutes support started to roll in by way of resources and financial assistance, so that the Lions Clubs from Knysna, Sedgefield, George and Eden could mobilise their Level Three emergency relief plans.

The objective of the Lions ALERT Program is to develop a plan of action in case of a Level One (affecting a few people), Level Two (affecting a community) or Level Three emergency (affecting hundreds or thousands of people in a region).

Lions members and affiliates immediately became involved by way of providing firefighting assistance, information dissemination, community and corporate resource requests, as well as sorting and distributing products to both victims and firefighters.

The response from the South Coast has been incredible and not only has the community rallied to support the cause, but generous donations have been received from businesses, organisations and service clubs.

Among the many contributions, Port Shepstone Rotary and Rotary Anns donated R10 000 worth of goods as well, along with Margate Round Table 46 which donated R4646.

Estate agents from Property Port dug into their own pockets and kindly donated R10 000.
