RNM lauded for decision to compile invasives plan

SOUTH Coast Conservancy Forum spokesman Dave Hallé has commended Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for being one of the first KwaZulu-Natal municipalities to commence the process of compiling an Invasive Species Monitoring, Control and Eradication Plan.

He said most of the South Coast’s conservancies had accepted the invitation to a recent workshop where they were asked to contribute to the development of the plan, which was a requirement of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Nemba) of 2004. All organs of state had to prepare a plan and complete it by October 16, he explained.
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has appointed Colette Terblanche of Colterra Environmental Consultants to compile the plan. At the meeting she discussed the process to be followed to develop the Invasive Species Monitoring, Control and Eradication Plan.
Those at the meeting were asked for information about the invasive species and their densities per area within the municipality and whether additional species needed to be added to the invasive species list that had already been compiled.
Existing invasive alien species control programmes were discussed and landowners who were controlling invasive species within the municipality were listed.
