Addressing several hundred young people at a local hall, MEC Pillay stressed Madiba’s extraordinary personal and political discipline, encouraging the youth to follow suit.
The inspirational message also focused on protection against cervical cancer, teenage pregnancies and social ills. A commitment to fund a youth development programme based on a business plan of up to R50 000 was also made on behalf of the Department of Human Settlements and Public Works.
Following the youth event, MEC Pillay asked to be taken to a local cemetery to pay homage to fallen comrades with whom he had worked in community and political organisations since the late 70s.
Aside from other Mandela Day programmes on the south coast, the MEC was scheduled to address the Durban launch of Mala Lutchmanan’s Tamil translation of Madiba’s ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ on Tuesday evening.
