Half-drowned hen rules the roost after rescue by police diver at Port Shepstone beach
It is not known if 'fowl' play was involved.
ONE very happy hen has found a new home at the Bulwer Street Veterinary Hospital in Port Shepstone after she was rescued from the sea.
The chicken, now named ‘Cuckoo’ by vet Claire Norton, is one lucky fowl thanks to police diver, Warrant Officer Marc Wiid from Port Shepstone SAPS Search and Rescue unit.
In a rescue of a different kind, W/O Wiid found the drenched and shivering white hen in shallow water, barely breathing, while he was doing his usual beach patrol along the seafront in Port Shepstone last week.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said W/O Wiid went to investigate after he noticed something strange in the water and had noticed some white candles that had washed onto the beach.
“He quickly picked up the chicken, wrapped her up in his towel and took heroff to the vet’s rooms in Port Shepstone,” she said.
Checking up on his near drowning ‘victim’ this week, W/O Wiid was amazed to see a very healthy and happy Cuckoo following Dr Norton’s every footstep around in the surgery.
Cuckoo has since had a shampoo and, as there are no other chickens around, she is queen of the roost!
