Marburg ‘hijack’ never happened – perjurers charged

The sequence of events as told by the two 'victims' did not tally, arousing police officers' suspicions.

TWO people who reported to police that they had been hijacked in Crescent Street in Umbango, Marburg last Saturday have appeared in court on charges of perjury.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said the two claimed they had come to a halt at a stop street at about 8pm when they were approached by two men.

“They claimed that the men had pointed a firearm at them and hauled them out of the vehicle before speeding off. The vehicle had then smashed through a wall and overturned,” she said.

No suspects were found at the scene or in the wreck. The vehicle, belonging to a local car dealership, was taken to the police pound for investigation as the sequence of events as told by the two ‘victims’ did not tally, arousing police officers’ suspicions.

“After questioning, the two ‘victims’ finally admitted to detectives that they had lied. The 28-year-old woman and the man (35) were charged with perjury and appeared in court on Tuesday this week. The case was postponed for further investigation.”

The police warn people once again that those who make false statements to police can face charges of perjury.
