Off-duty police join forces to arrest suspected housebreaker in Umtentweni

The man was charged with attempted housebreaking and trespassing.

POLICEMEN and women sign the code of conduct when joining the SAPS and have to undertake to serve their community, no matter what time or under what circumstances.

Well that is exactly what the ‘men in blue’ at Port Shepstone did last Thursday. Most were already on their way home after completing their shifts, when a report was received of housebreakers seen in a yard in Chaka Road, Umtentweni.

On hearing the call the officers put their families and personal lives aside and officers from the K9 unit, Search and Rescue unit and security companies, made their way to the address.

“When they arrived they were informed that officers from a security company had responded to an alarm at one of the houses where a window was found ajar,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

However domestic workers not far from Chaka Road had seen someone wearing a red top in the yard of another property. A description was given out to all police vehicles and a search began in the area. Shortly afterwards, a 19-year-old man, fitting the description, walked straight into Lt-Col Gavin de Lange and Sergeant Mark Banjo from the K9 unit in Port Shepstone.

The man was arrested and was identified by witnesses. An attempted housebreaking case and a trespassing case were opened. He is due to appear in court soon.

Station commander of Port Shepstone, Brigadier Sandra Nala, was impressed with the officers’ quick response. Investigation will be done to establish whether the man can be linked to other housebreakings in the area.
