UPDATE: Search continues for pet missing after N2 crash leaves owner dead

A PENNINGTON man identified as Chris Steenkamp died in an accident near the Umzimkhulu bridge on the N2 southbound during the early hours of last Saturday morning.

The cause of the accident is still unknown and a case of culpable homicide has been registered for investigation.

“The man was found outside the vehicle, which had overturned,” said Port Shepstone SAPS communications officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Mr Steenkamp and his fiance Jessica French’s three dogs were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

One of the dogs was killed in the accident, and a second was unharmed.

The third, a nine-month-old basset-pitbull cross, is still missing.

Miss French, who is currently in the United Kingdom, has offered a reward of R2 000 for information leading to the safe return of Snoopy.

A COLLISION between a taxi and a light motor vehicle on the N2 southbound between the Umtentweni bridge and Umzimkulu River bridge earlier today has left 13 people injured.

According to reports, it appears as if the car with a single occupant was looking for a dog which had run off following a fatal accident in the same vicinity in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency services.

The SAPS Search and Rescue division’s quick response enabled them to assist the patients, including extricating a passenger trapped in the taxi.

A total of 13 patients were treated at the scene by SAPS search and rescue, KZN EMRS, Hibiscus Med-Evac and Kwazulu Private Ambulance. Twelve of those patients were subsequently transported to various hospitals.

Three patients were seriously injured, and nine patients suffered minor injuries.
