Police seize firearm and ammo in Tweni

The man could not produce a firearm licence.

EXCELLENT teamwork by the men in blue resulted in the seizure of a firearm and ammunition from a motorist in Umtentweni last Sunday.

Constable Travis Dickens and other members from the Port Shepstone Public Order Policing (POP) team were on duty and patrolling the residential area of Umtentweni, when they saw a gold double cab with NPN registration plates which was swerving across the road.

They managed to force the driver to pull off and requested to see his driver’s licence. They then searched the vehicle and found a Norinco 9mm pistol, one magazine and eight live rounds of ammunition underneath the driver’s seat.

“The driver could not produce any licence and he was arrested. He will face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition without a licence and will appear in Port Shepstone court soon,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Acting cluster commander, Brigadier Sandra Nala, welcomed the arrest and the recovery of the firearm and ammunition.

She said that too many crimes were being committed by criminals who were in possession of unlicensed firearms and one unlicensed firearm in the wrong hands, is one too many.
