Ugu recognised for empowering women

Four of the municipality's departments are headed by women.

UGU Municipality recently won yet another award, this time for empowering women, at the 14th Annual Standard Bank Top Women Awards held at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg last Thursday.

Ugu was honoured for playing a big role in ensuring that the municipality was dominated by women in top positions.The municipality competed against two other municipalities.

Ugu spokesman, France Zama, said they were excited about winning the award.

“We are proud to announce that four of the municipality’s departments: water services, treasury, infrastructure and economic development and corporate services department are headed by women.”

Mr Zama also mentioned projects to empower rural women were in the pipeline.

“The municipality will continue ensuring that empowerment of women forms part of the district’s developmental agenda and through this empowerment we will also be able to fight the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.”
