DESPITE numerous warnings from police, gullible people are still falling victim to the most basic of scams.
The scenario: You see something for sale online – either on a classified advert website or on Facebook – and you make contact with the advertiser who convinces you to deposit payment before they will hand over the goods. And it’s goodbye money, goodbye goods.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said a woman had recently seen an online advert for a French bulldog puppy and made payment into the seller’s bank account, the details of which were emailed to her.
Needless to say, she did not receive the dog, and a case of theft was opened.
“In another case, a woman saw an advert for a luxury motor vehicle for sale on social media,” she said. “The woman also deposited a large sum of money into the seller’s account. She never received the vehicle and all attempts to reach the seller on the contact number provided failed. A fraud case is being investigated,” she said.
