Murder accused appears in Umzinto court

The tavern owner died on the way to hospital.

Wandile Chala (28) appeared in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court, charged with murder and business robbery, will appear in court again on September 28 for bail application.

Chala –  and four accomplices –  is accused of having approached a Malangeni tavern owner who was closing up his business on the evening of December 12, 2016.

The owner, 40-year-old Thokozani Myende, was held at gunpoint and robbed of liquor, an airtime dispensing machine and money.

“Before leaving, one of the men shot Myende and robbed him of his firearm,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

“Myende died on the way to hospital.”

The charges were registered for investigation by the Umzinto SAPS and assigned to Detective Warrant Officer Steyn Moonsamy.

Months passed and he followed what leads he got. Eventually it became clear that the perpetrator was not a local.

Warrant Officer Moonsamy reached out to the National Intervention Unit for assistance and, at last, on Sunday, September 10, Chala was arrested at a Durban hostel.
