Four Scottburgh burglars caught making their getaway

Police also seized caps and reflective jackets that had been worn by the suspects, who reportedly posed as Ugu water meter readers.

PORT SHEPSTONE policemen arrested four alleged burglars and recovered suspected stolen property as well as housebreaking implements last Thursday.

Sergeants Rudi Smit and Selby Cele and Constables Sandile Mpisane and Sbu Cele of the Ugu Cluster 10111 Call Centre response unit, were in Scottburgh last week in search of a vehicle that had reportedly been hijacked.

Making their way back on the R102 Old Main Road, just before the Pennington drive turn-off, they noticed a blue car heading towards the freeway in a suspicious manner.

They pulled the vehicle over near the Sezela turn-off and discovered that the number plates were false. They found a bag containing housebreaking implements as well as two large flat screen TVs in the vehicle.

During the search of the vehicle, the members received an alert that a house in Pennington had been burgled and flat screen TVs had been stolen.

The Scottburgh SAPS was informed and the suspects arrested by the Call Centre response crew were positively linked to the break-in.

Police also seized caps and reflective jackets that had been worn by the suspects, allegedly posing as Ugu water meter readers.

Those arrested face charges of housebreaking and theft and the unlawful possession of housebreaking implements.

Investigations and profiling of the arrested men revealed that two of them were wanted in four cases of burglary each, the third was wanted in two other cases of burglary while the fourth was linked to four cases of theft of motor vehicles.

The vehicle was impounded and investigations continue by Detective Warrant Officer Yugen Moodley of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service. The case has been postponed to October 25 in the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court for bail application.
