Scottburgh High pupils shoot for the stars at science fair

These pupils represented Southern KZN at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair, competing against five countries and performed brilliantly.

SCOTTBURGH HIGH can be proud after three of its pupils produced outstanding results at an international science fair.

The science fair was held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Johannesburg earlier this month and enabled pupils to showcase their scientific investigations and engineering projects.

Grade 9 pupil, Sarishka Amichund, took home a bronze medal for her sterling efforts on a cryogenics project.

Khilona Piyarlall, also in grade 9, did exceptionally well when she received a gold award in her category for her ‘automatic water dispenser for pets’ project, which earned her R500, then a further R1 000 for winning her category in the junior section and finally a grand amount of R50 000 for producing the Best Overall Junior Project across all categories.Khilona also received a laptop for her outstanding achievements.

Grade 11 pupil, Ashraf Moosa, also performed well at the expo and won gold for his project on optimising microbial cells. He received R500 for his project. In addition to this he was awarded the option of a bursary for his first year of study from Wits University in the engineering faculty and a R50 000 bursary for his first year of study in any faculty from Stellenbosch University.
