THE first few days on the job can be tough, but it was not so for K9 Dexter. Dexter is the newest member of the Port Shepstone K9 Unit. Last Thursday a woman was in the lounge of her home in Izotsha when she heard her dog growling.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said when the woman went to investigate, she found a man in her kitchen. “He was holding a knife in his hand. She started screaming and he grabbed her by the throat. Her husband responded to her screams but the suspect fled from the kitchen,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
The attacker was seen disappearing into nearby bushes. Officers from Port Shepstone K9 unit as well as 10111 Call Centre rushed to the area and started searching for the suspect. It was not long before they spotted the fleeing man and all requests to stop were ignored as he ran further into the bushes.

“Constable Orlando Nyawose from the Port Shepstone K9 Unit and his partner, Dexter, followed the spoor and when the suspect refused to surrender, Dexter was utilised and he apprehended the suspect,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
A knife was recovered from him. Constable Nyawose has reason to be proud of his partner as it is the dog’s first arrest since he started working with his handler on October 2. Dexter is only five years old.
The 18-year-old suspect will face a charge of attempted house robbery and an investigation will also be done to establish if he was involved in other cases reported in the area recently.
