St Martin de Porres school was blessed with the presence of former South African Paralympic champion, deaf swimmer Terence Parkin on Monday, this week.

Terence who lives in Durban, visited the school to teach deaf pupils about the importance of learning how to swim. Ugu District Aquatics Committee recently provided the school with a Learn to Swim programme which is funded by Lotto.
Terence said, “With the recent storms in KwaZulu-Natal, it’s important to know how to swim. The festive season is around the corner and everyone loves going to the beach during the holiday season, so that is another reason to know how to swim.”
”Pupils should also know the importance of red flags on the beach because they indicate whether or not it is safe to swim there.”

The committee also allocated two coaches to the school, Nicky Lilje and Gerhard Labuschagne, who train and teach pupils about basic swimming strokes and water safety.
