Umtamvuna Views: Outing turns into a nightmare for Roy and Judith
Roy sustained broken ribs and bruising and the car was a total write off.
PORT Edward residents Roy and Judith Simpson were in Durban last Friday visiting friends and as Roy turned right at the traffic lights in Umgeni Road, a taxi jumped the red light and rammed into the passenger door. Paramedics were soon on the scene and the ‘jaws of life’ had to be used. Miraculously Judith was very bruised and shocked but otherwise okay and Roy sustained broken ribs and bruising. The vehicle was a total write off. Judith commented “God’s hand was definitely protecting us and I am lucky to be alive!”
Borrow pit concerns
The ‘borrow pit’ planned for Arbour Glade on the R61 was discussed in detail at a recent meeting. Issues raised included how the project would affect the sensitive fauna and flora, water, dust and noise pollution; cultural sensitivities, the general aesthetics of the area and traffic between Port Edward and Leisure Bay. Chairman of the Residents’, Ratepayers’, Businesses and Farms of the Port Edward and Banners Rest Area Association Peter Brereton said that while the community was in total agreement that the development should go ahead, they were strongly against the location of the borrow pit. Leisure Bay’s residents and ratepayers are urged to put their concerns in writing and forward these to KSEMS, which would help the appeal process. Interested and affected parties are reminded to register with Nishkar Maharaj of KSEMS, 4 Woodville Lane (off Hawkstone Road), Summerveld, Assegai, at PO Box 396, Gillett’s 3603, email Nishkar@ksems.co.za, phone 031 7691578, fax 086 5355281 or www.ksems.co.za

Thanks Miranda
Guesthouse owner of Leisure Retreat in Leisure Bay Marinda Strydom embarked on her own initiative to separate plastic and glass from the refuse collected at the resort and the incredible initiative has had three amazing results:-
* The tops from plastic bottles collected will raise funds for the Sweethearts Foundation (Wheelchair Foundation) which collects and recycles bread tags and plastic bottle tops;
* Glass and other recyclable items will be sold to the recyclable buy-back bank; and
* The resort has seen a huge reduction in the number of black bags that will eventually end up in a landfill site.
A huge thank you to Miranda for this great initiative. She is an inspiration and fine example for everyone.
