DURING the month of December 2017, 353 men were taken into custody for sexual offence-related cases in the province.
Various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units across KwaZulu-Natal have managed to secure a number of convictions for crimes directed against women and children and, thus far, eight accused have received life sentences for rape while others were sentenced to a total of 277 years’ imprisonment.

“These accused were convicted for various crimes such as rape, murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, child pornography, child abandonment and robbery,” said Provincial SAPS spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.
Welcoming the sentences, KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major-General Bheki Langa said: “I further commend the members for securing such convictions and this shows our commitment in the fight against abuse directed against women and children. We will continue with our operations to make sure that those involved in such crimes are brought to book and face the might of the law.”
