It was all systems go at Scottburgh Mall last Wednesday afternoon when two men thought they could outrun security officer, Muzi Mngomezulu after stealing from Clicks.
The men jumped into a car and sped off onto the R102 Old Main Road.
“The driver failed to manoeuvre the vehicle around a curve just before the Mpambinyoni river bridge, collided with another car and smacked into the concrete side of the bridge on the wrong side of the road before finally coming to a standstill straddling the concrete wall of the sidewalk,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The vehicle was a write-off.

It is believed that the two occupants tried once again to flee on foot. Luckily, they were stopped by a policeman who was travelling in the opposite direction as well as the security guard who had given chase from the mall.
“A 1.8kg tin of baby formula that had allegedly been stolen from Clicks store at the Scottburgh Mall, was recovered from the vehicle and both men were arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving, as well as theft,” said Captain Pandarum.
At the same time, a 20-year-old woman was arrested by mall security at Clicks after being found in possession of two tins of baby formula.

She is believed to be an accomplice to the two men arrested. She was charged with shoplifting and detained pending her first appearance at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court with the two supposed accomplices, aged 31 and 24.
The cases are being investigated by Constable Nkululeku Goodman Phakathi of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service.
Muzi would like to thank Colonel Ralph Ruiters and Captain Vijay Moodley and the rest of Scottburgh SAPS for all their help and also for the increased visible security at the mall during the festive season.
“It was much appreciated and made our workload a little lighter,” he said.
