Cops warn of ‘Captain Japa’ Umzinto SAPS recruitment scam

The conman asks his victims to pay R2 500 in order to join the SAPS now.

There have been reports from Umzinto SAPS about a conman pretending to be a policeman and requesting payment for recruitment into the SAPS.

“The public is advised that vacancies in the SAPS are advertised in the media and that no payment is requested from applicants,” Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The conman is apparently calling himself ‘Captain Japa’ of the SAPS recruiting offices, telling those interested that some of the applicants in the January/February intake have dropped out.

The new recruits are then required to meet him in the Umzinto CBD and give him R2 500 to replace the dropouts.

Those who may have fallen victim to this scam or who have any other information are asked to contact Detective Warrant Officer Steyn Moonsamy of the Umzinto SAPS at 039 9746500.
