Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court deals with many offenders – ranging from minor to major crimes – on a daily basis.
This Monday saw the appearance in court of three drug users, two of whom were for the common case of being in possession of one gram of dagga, while the third was a 26-year-old man found in possession of 15 grams.
Upon hearing that he was a first-time offender, had a child to look after, had no money for bail and taking into consideration the fact that he spent the weekend in police custody, the court decided to caution the man and discharge him.

“We see how most drug addicts today started on dagga and move on to harder drugs and become burdens to society if they’re not stopped in time,” said Magistrate Elsophie Botha.
Also in court:
• A 29-year-old man is facing charges of drunken driving. Legal Aid was granted and he was granted bail of R500. The man will make his next court appearance on March 7.
• A case of malicious damage to property was opened against a young woman. She is to appear back at court on the 27th.
• A plea for bail will take place on March 9. This is for a man who was caught exceeding the legal speed limit.
