UMDONI Municipality’s Exco meeting began with a bang as the honourable mayor, Thabani Dube, reprimanded his colleagues for not being punctual at work.
The municipality’s doors are expected to be open from 7.30am, but the mayor took note of staff pitching up at 8am and some later.
“It’s shocking that 90 percent of the staff here cannot come to work on time, but are ready to leave long before work hours end,” he said.

After that impromptu disciplinary warning, a matter arose concerning damaged vehicles.
The councillors felt that vehicles should in future be allocated only to the heads of department. It was then discovered that vehicles that were damaged were going ‘missing’ and not fixed when they could have been.
The matter is under investigation and the general manager has been notified about it.
Budget-wise, the mayor suggested that they have been paying a lot of money to Eskom and are not satisfied with the outcome. “We pay so much, yet still don’t even get maintained street lights,” he said.

Another issue was discussed regarding the eviction of several Karim’s Lane tenants.
The property is council-owned and the land was going to be developed as soon as the people moved from there.
There was no ruling as to whether the people stay or go just yet.
