Ugu District Municipality municipal manager ‘DD’ Naidoo has said the municipality will no longer tolerate councillors who are at constant loggerheads with the entity, encouraging them instead to become ‘part of the solution’.
According to Mr Naidoo, there were some councillors who stirred up emotions on social media, disseminated their own information and criticised the municipality’s operations in public.
This, he said, was unacceptable as these same councillors had been involved in decision-making at council meetings.
Mr Naidoo was speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday this week, at which he pointed out how remarkable it was that ‘success had many parents, but failure was an orphan’.
He added that while the municipality did not expect councillors to turn a blind eye to its shortcomings, it did however expect them to help restore the municipality’s credibility and work together in providing better services to communities.
Mr Naidoo said his team was geared up and fully equipped to handle the Easter weekend, when hundreds of visitors are expected to flock to the South Coast.
“Plans have been put in place to ensure a hassle-free long weekend and additional resources are in place to respond to any water and sanitation-related emergencies.”
He added that the municipality would ensure that major disruptions and breaks would be attended to quickly, that all reservoirs were full and that staff would monitor all plants.
“We will make sure there are no sanitation spills, so that people can enjoy themselves on our beaches. We will also ensure our call centre is operational for calls, complaints and reports.”
