40 years of ‘home away from home’ at landmark Scottburgh hotel for Gauteng couple
The couple fell in love with the South Coast and decided to make Scottburgh part of their lives, and those of their children.
John and Lones Osborne have been coming to the Blue Marlin Hotel every Easter holiday for the past 40 years.
The couple, who are from Roodepoort in Gauteng, first came down to the hotel as newly-weds. They fell in love with the South Coast and what it had to offer and decided to make Scottburgh part of their lives.
They introduced their family members to this ‘cosy little town’ through the hotel, situated in Scott Street, and soon bought shares in it. Once a year, in March, the Osbornes would bring friends and family to the South Coast to stay at the hotel.

“We love this area and what a family-orientated hotel this is as it enables us, year after year, to reunite with friends and family this side,” said Lones.
They spent their first child Natalie’s first birthday here and daughter Jenna’s and even Lones’s mother’s birthdays have been celebrated at the coast.
They also spend their anniversary here on April 2 every year. The hotel has become part of their lives and the lives of the six or seven other families that visit Scottburgh with them.
“One of the most memorable events we’ve encountered throughout the years has got to be the wedding of the old co-owners of the hotel, Sandy and Phillip Curtis, which was just so beautiful,” said John.
The couple have become so involved with the hotel that they are certain they know every staff member by name and have built that special relationship with them too.

Besides the hotel, the Osbornes love the ‘happy’ atmosphere of the South Coast, as well as the weather and, of course, Scottburgh beach.
“There are way too many memories to list all over a 40-year period. We have become like the furniture of this hotel as we’ve seen every stage of its growth,” added Lones.
Assistant general manager of the Blue Marlin Hotel, Malthee Singh, is extremely grateful to the couple for their dedication to the hotel for the past 40 years and is glad that they have made this hotel part of their lives as a second home.
