The Malangeni community has welcomed the handover of the Malangeni Phase 2D Water and Sanitation Project.
This marks an important milestone in efforts to improve access to reliable water services and strengthen service delivery in the area.
The project was officially commissioned by Ugu District Municipality mayor, Sikhumbuzo Isaac Mqadi, who unveiled the project plaque and formally handed it over to the community last week.
Umdoni’s mayor, Mbali Cele-Luthuli, welcomed the project, highlighting its importance to residents, who have been experiencing water shortages.
Addressing the significance of the project, Cele-Luthuli emphasised that access to water is fundamental to human dignity, public health and community development.
“Water is not a luxury; it is a basic necessity and an essential component of human dignity. We welcome the handover of the Malangeni Phase 2D Water and Sanitation Project, as it represents an important step towards addressing the water challenges experienced by our community,” she said.
“Our residents deserve reliable access to water, and initiatives such as this bring hope and reassurance that their needs remain a priority.”
She also mentioned that Umdoni recognises the importance of cooperation between Ugu District Municipality and Umdoni Local Municipality in ensuring that communities receive the services they need.
“We are particularly encouraged by the prospect of continued, uninterrupted water services for the Malangeni community. Water is essential for households, schools, businesses and the overall well-being of our people. We therefore urge community members to protect the infrastructure, use water responsibly and work with the relevant authorities to safeguard this investment for present and future generations,” she added.
Beyond improving access to water and sanitation services, the project also contributed to local economic development by creating 88 employment opportunities.
