A firearm believed to belong to a police officer was recovered at a primary school in Turton near Hibberdene last Monday.
Hibberdene police were called to the school at about 11am. “Teachers reported to police that the seven-year-old pupil was found carrying a firearm which he pointed at children, while standing on a desk, telling them to lie down,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Teachers managed to take the firearm from the child, and police discovered that there was no magazine or ammunition in the weapon.
It is believed that the firearm belongs to an officer stationed at Port Shepstone Saps. “A docket of failure to lock away a firearm as prescribed was opened and the firearm was confiscated by police. Those who fail to safeguard their licensed firearms according to prescripts will be charged accordingly. Keys to safes must also be kept according to prescripts so that other people cannot gain access to the firearm,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
Police are trying to figure out how the child came to be in possession of the weapon. Investigations are continuing.
