Gunman wounded in Marburg taxi shoot-out with security officers

Three passengers in the taxi were also wounded.

Two security officers from Lazer 911 were lucky to escape injury when they were involved in a shooting in Marburg last Thursday.

The courageous reaction officers, Gansen Naidoo and Wilson Lemon, tackled an armed man who had earlier shot and wounded three passengers in a taxi. The drama unfolded when a 28-year-old man, a passenger in a minibus taxi in Marburg had an argument with other passengers. As the taxi was about to leave the man got out and fired shots which injured three passengers sitting at the back.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said once the man had fired shots at the taxi the driver sped off. “Police officers were called and security officers also responded,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Speaking to the Herald, officer Naidoo said he was patrolling the Main Harding Road in Marburg when he noticed the commotion near a service station.

“When I was approaching the scene the gunman hid and I called for back-up. The gunman was later spotted further up the road. When he was approached by reaction officer Lemon, the man drew his firearm and officer Lemon tackled him to the ground,” said Mr Naidoo.

The suspect refused to let go of the firearm and fired two more shots while resisting arrest. Seeing the imminent danger his colleague was in, officer Naidoo had to fully restrain the gunman by firing a shot, which hit the gunman in the abdomen.

The wounded man was taken to hospital and is under police guard. He will be charged with two separate cases of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The gunman is due to appear in court soon.
