Umdoni councillors target bribery and corruption at Umzinto licensing department and test centre

It is believed that two tariffs are issued at the test centre, one with the booking price and another with bribe money included, said to be around R2 500.

Corruption and bribery were the main issues brought up at the Umdoni Municipality council meeting held at the Scottburgh Town Hall last Wednesday morning.

The Umzinto licensing office and test centre has, for several years, been under investigation for bribery and corruption, yet when the time comes for something to be done, the matter is swept under the carpet.

Councillors mentioned that they know for a fact that there are several driving schools which quote two tariffs when booking students for their driving test – one tariff with the booking price and another with bribe money added, which is said to be around R2 500.

The matter is still under investigation.

The Scottburgh beachfront development was also a hot topic of discussion.

Members of the Ugu South Coast Development Agency were present at the meeting and gave a presentation of their proposed plans.

They believe that, by the end of this development, Scottburgh beach should be seen as an alternative to the Durban beachfront.

It should also have recreational activities and interests which will appeal to the whole family, but especially young people.

The agency said that Scottburgh needed to regain that ‘value’ aspect and this was how it planned to achieve this.
