Street racing was all the rage in the 1940s on the Durban beachfront and in Pietermaritzburg, and in 1953, the then Natal saw its first race track and in the early 1960s a short-lived Grand Prix Circuit.

In the 1990s, the Idube International Raceway was another flash track with only a bike racing track being used today. During periods where no race tracks were available, riders took to the streets to keep their passion for the sport revving.

Today, Motorsport South Africa’s only approved KZN race track is Dezzi South Coast Raceway in Oslo Beach, a scenic coastal track built on an airfield.

The 2.5km circuit has two purpose-built drift tracks linked by a stretch of high-speed corners, providing breathtaking action all round.

The KZN Road Racing Club (KZNRRC) holds monthly racing events at Dezzi South Coast Raceway, which not only attracts petrol heads, but also families and visitors.

“It’s a day enjoyed by those who are simply keen on something different. It is always action-packed, and never fails to impress,” says Graham Montanari of the KZNRRC.

The KZNRRC racing events include motorcycle and motor car racing, as well as retro saloon car racing, featuring classic cars such as Ford Escorts, Anglias, Minis and more.

Club fees are R350-R400 with spectator entrance fees dependant on event, but in general these are in the range of R150 per family of four.
