Looking back on South Coast history: May 12 to 14
A coronation and a centenary Made this an eventful week.
MARBURG had a rather unusual problem.
May 12
1978
“TECHNICALLY, it would appear that the Indian town of Marburg does not exist. When the Supreme Court judgment cancelled the proclamation for the amalgamation of Port Shepstone, Oslo Beach and Umtentweni last week, it also cancelled the section regarding the formation of the Indian town.
“When the interdict restraining Exco from enforcing the amalgamation was granted 19 months ago, there was a specific arrangement that the section referring to the Indian town was not included in the application, but the whole proclamation has been withdrawn.
“However, the Administrator has the power to put through a new proclamation and the town could well be ‘reinstated’ in this week’s Provincial Gazette.”
MEANWHILE bureaucracy was hampering trade. “White traders in the South Coast area bordering KwaZulu have been hard hit by the sudden refusal of permits to deliver goods into KwaZulu. This is also causing considerable hardship for the black people living in the rural areas.”
1981
“THE Borough of Port Shepstone disclaimed responsibility for laying pavements outside privately-owned businesses.”
1989
“TOTAL lack of community involvement in the Port Shepstone Child and Family Care Centre’s social welfare services has resulted in a crisis situation which could lead to the closure of the organisation which has provided service to the community for over 50 years.”
AND the Shelly Beach Town Board resolved to accept the recommendations of the LSC Water Corporation with regard to the disposal of sewage.

ALFRED County celebrated 100 years.

1937
“DULL, leaden skies, with rain in the early morning, proved no damper to the Port Shepstone and District Coronation Day Celebrations on Wednesday last. From an early hour optimists set out for the grounds, confident that the rain would hold off – an optimism that proved correct.”

1965
“FROM some centres on the upper South Coast comes the news of drastic (water) restrictions being applied. Fortunately in the lower part of the South Coast the necessity for applying any water restrictions at all has not yet arisen.”
1971
“UVONGO will have a town hall/civic theatre by the end of this year.”
