Attendance poor but Ivungu River Conservancy sports day unites clubs
After hosting the event, participating organisations look forward to a closer working relationship in future.
ALTHOUGH attendance at the Uvongo family sports and outdoor day was disappointing, Ivungu River Conservancy members are sure that the event has helped cement ties between the participating organisations.
The sports day was held in the Ivungu River Reserve where conservancy members set up an information table to provide details about the reserve and their efforts to conserve its natural flora and fauna. The conservancy also works to eradicate alien invasives along shoreline pathway, Saints Walk.

Conservancy members Paddy Norman and Dave Hallé also led an interesting and informative walk along the Ivungu River Reserve trails.
Local parkrunners also set up house in the reserve to provide information about the Uvongo parkrun, the free, timed 5km run or walk from St Michael’s beach to Uvongo beach via Saints Walk and back, held every Saturday morning at 8am. Organised under the international parkrun banner, it is one of 136 events held all over South Africa each week. About 20 countries are part of the global parkrun movement.

Members of three Uvongo sports clubs that have premises within the Ivungu River Reserve opened their clubhouses to the public. Bowlers were very proud to show off the the newly revamped Riverside Sports Club, previously known as the Uvongo Bowling Club.
This friendly club offers excellent facilities that include an attractive bar and outdoor braai area, bowling greens, night bowls facilities, pool, darts, dance classes, aerobics, a speakers’ club, pizza oven, braai facilities and social membership for a minimal annual fee. It hosts a lively social evening every Friday.
Uvongo Tennis Club has been a valuable asset to its town for many generations and is still going strong. It offers excellent facilities for tennis players and is playing an active role in promoting the sport among young people, with various youth programmes in place.

South Coast Striders Athletics Club needs little introduction as it has been something of an institution on the South Coast since its inception in 1977. Its active, busy members work hard to promote running and walking in this area and have nurtured a great deal of talent over the years.
The sports day was a small beginning but those participating hope it will promote closer co-operation and communication between all the organisations. It is hoped that the Ivungu River Reserve and the three clubhouses will become a dynamic community, sports and outdoor recreation hub that will be of even greater benefit to the town.
