Colourful orchids go on show at Hibiscus Mall – just in time for Mother’s Day

Rare and exotic species were on show, and with colours ranging from white to brown and yellow and dark purple, the beautiful blooms attracted a lot of attention.

The Alfred County Orchid Society orchid show at Hibiscus Mall last Saturday was a show-stopper.

Orchid experts from the society helped educate the many visitors about orchids, their natural environment and their unique characteristics.

Rare and exotic species were on show, and with colours ranging from white to brown and yellow and dark purple, the beautiful blooms attracted a lot of attention.

Vice-chairman of the Alfred County Orchid Society, Martin Rautenbach said the show was a huge success.

“The attendance at this year’s show was outstanding,” he said. “Adding to the success was the fact that the next day was Mother’s Day and many visitors purchased orchids for the special women in their lives. Interestingly, the word orchid is derived from the Greek ‘orkhis’, meaning testicle and the plant’s roots have a similar shape. Orchids are also related to the vanilla family,” added Mr Rautenbach.
