The team, led by Cindy Mkhize, founder of the Murchison-based non-profit organisation called ‘Ntombizonke’, visited new mothers at the hospital’s maternity section with lots of goodie-bags.

The goodie-bags were filled with home-made baby blankets, clothing, nappies, pads, baby wipes, baby soaps and cards from ‘Embrace’, a national movement for connected, supported and celebrated motherhood that drives the MDC campaign.

According to Ms Mkhize, women from her organisation teamed up and nominated their nearest birth facility in support of the movement because they believed mothers should be pampered after giving birth.

Ongeziwe Sweleni, who had given birth to a baby girl on Monday, said that, through the visit from the Ntombizonke team, she had realised what sisterhood was.

Nolufefe Ngubelanga (left) was delighted to have her share of baby clothing for her newborn. She is pictured with Murchison maternity operations manager, Zandile Latha.

“It was an unexpected surprise after having received my bundle of joy, this has brought new hope to us new mothers, who are often scared and feeling lonely, to begin our journeys with our heads held high,” she said.

Sthabile Mzele from Ntombizonke organisation is pictured handing over a goodie-bag to Snegugu Njomi and her new bundle of joy, Alwande.

The hospital’s operations manager in the maternity section, Zandile Latha, thanked the women for their initiative. She said their efforts and gifts had brought joy and healing to the new mothers and encouraged them to continue giving and inspiring other young mothers.
