Spike in crime is cause for concern

A teenage girl was shot dead in one of the robberies.

Towns north of Southport have recently been targeted by criminals, with cases including murder, house robbery, business robbery and housebreaking being reported.

Murder

Twin sisters (13) were asleep at their grandfather’s home in Qwabe Location near Hibberdene when a man broke the window and entered the room last Friday night/early Saturday.

He was armed with a firearm. He shone his cellphone light into the face of one of the girls and demanded money. “Her sister grabbed the opportunity to run and call their grandfather,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. “When they returned to the room, they found the teen was dead. She had been shot in the face.” No arrests have been made.

Business robbery

* Seven armed men, wearing balaclavas, robbed patrons at the Pitstop restaurant in Banana Beach at around 1.30am last Saturday morning. Basil Lanka of Lazer 911 Security said reaction officers André van der Westhuizen, Tiaan Vermeulen and Robbie Pypers were dispatched. The robbers had locked everybody up in the office. An undisclosed sum of cash had also been taken. The men then fled in one of the patron’s cars, which was later found abandoned in Beach Road, Melville. No arrests have been made.

* A security guard at a school in Hibberdene was assaulted by two men last Sunday at about 6am. The guard was patrolling the building when he saw two men on the premises.

The security guard tried to run away but was caught by the two men who then stabbed him in the head. “They searched his pockets and dragged him back to the guardhouse where he was assaulted with a piece of wood. They took him to the kitchen where they broke the door before fleeing with the gate remote, school keys and some food,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Housebreaking

* Three men gained entry to a home in Qolo Qolo near Hibberdene at about 1am last Friday. A 15-year-old boy was awoken by the sound of the TV being switched off.

He saw three men wearing gloves and balaclavas, armed with knives. They instructed him to be quiet and left with a flat screen TV, DVD player and a pair of shoes.

* Visitors from Merebank in Durban were at a holiday home in Stiebel Rocks Road in Umzumbe last Saturday night when they heard a noise.

Upon investigating they saw three men inside the house, one of whom was armed with a knife. One of the visitors shouted and the men fled, taking three bags and a cellphone.

* Earlier that day, a 59-year-old woman was at her home in Beach Road, Melville, when she discovered that the glass and burglar guards had been removed from a window.

* An 84-year-old woman living in Bendigo Road, Anerley was awoken by the sound of the bedroom window being broken. She saw a man looking in and when she screamed, he fled.
