Saps warns parents against leaving children unsupervised

Police noted an increase in the number of pupils wandering the streets when schools closed.

Police have issued a stern warning to parents whose children become victims of crime because they have been left unsupervised after school hours.

According to Port Shepstone police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, guilty parents will be charged with gross negligence.

This comes after police noted an increase in the number of pupils wandering the streets when schools closed.

Lieutenant-Colonel Wiid said these children were often found in the late afternoon, trying to get home after their transport had already left.

“It needs to be pointed out that small children are vulnerable and can become victims of crime. We want to emphasise that the safety and well-being of children is the responsibility of parents.

“Once children leave school in the afternoon, parents should ensure that they are picked up by their pre-arranged transport and that they have reached home safely.”

She added police would not hesitate to take action and charge parents who neglect to safeguard their children.
