RIP André
André Gouws of Munster died last Friday (18th) at South Coast Hospice. He had been battling cancer for many years. He was born in Kimberly, but settled in Natal in the 70s.
He joined the Munster Town Board (as town clerk) in 1988. He and his first wife, Hannie, owned a beach house in Munster and often travelled from Durban to enjoy getaways.

André loved Munster and was a great ‘community-man’. After Hannie died, he married Connie and together they spent many happy years in the little hamlet.
He leaves his wife and adopted daughter Lizzie and will be deeply missed by all who knew this kind, loving and dedicated man. His service will be held this Friday (25th) at the Port Edward Methodist Church at 12pm.
Raring to go
Eight local hikers and two visitors embarked on an exciting four day excursion into the former Transkei. The ten ‘raring-to-go’ walkers set off from the Wild Coast Sun last Monday but soon had their enthusiasm cooled with torrential rain.
They walked 15km to Nyameni where they were greeted with hot mugs of tea and freshly-baked bread. They slept in a rural hut and enjoyed the experience of spending time in a genuine Pondo homestead.
The next day the group set off south for the next large river mouth, the Mtentu. The walked past the spectacular Red Desert which was far bigger than any of them imagined.
Unspoiled beauty
Eighteen kilometres later, through rain, wind, cold and sunshine, they reached the Mtentu River Lodge where they enjoyed hot showers and relative luxury.
Last Wednesday they walked inland and enjoyed the gorge and spectacular Mtentu Falls and on Thursday morning they trudged up and down the abundant Transkei coastal hills until boarding their taxi bound for home. The hike was long and tiring, but each of the group thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and the wild, unspoiled scenery. All news to Philippa.
