The policemen and women have put aside their blue attire and are competing in the 500kg weight division for women and 640kg for men.

Ugu Cluster commander, Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele welcomed all those taking part to the South Coast. She read a message from KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Major-General Bhekinkosi Langa.

In that message he said that one of the priorities of the South African Police Services was to pay special attention to the morale and health of every employee within the organisation.

“Sport forms an integral part of the organisation as it contributes to the attainment of good health, the improvement of physical attributes, greater personal fulfilment and better development of personality, as well as mental preparedness of our employees.”

He added that the Saps actively promoted its officers in various types of sporting codes.

“By hosting such events we are ensuring that all officers achieve the prescribed levels of physical fitness and physique required for them to effectively perform their duties as police officials,” said Maj-Gen Langa.

The Tug of War World Championships will be held in Cape Town later this year.
