Ray Nkonyeni, Umzumbe and Umuziwabantu municipalities are among the six municipalities in KZN to boast clean audits for the 2016/17 financial year.
This is no mean feat, coming as it does after Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu’s announcement that irregular and wasteful expenditure was on the rise in most municipalities across the country.

Last Wednesday, the A-G said out of 257 audited municipalities around the country, only 33 had managed to achieve clean audits.
This he described as ‘disappointing’ and ‘an illustration of irregular and unnecessary spending by municipalities’.
Mr Makwetu pointed out that municipalities had increased their wasteful spending by R28.4 billion, and that most did not heed his advice on administrative lapses and failures.
He added that the financial health of some municipalities was at risk, mainly due to their inability to gather revenue owed.
Speaking at a council meeting on Tuesday this week, RNM mayor Cynthia Mqwebu told councillors that receiving a clean audit was a great achievement for the municipality.
The mayor congratulated both the political and administration components of the municipality for having worked together to ensure that the municipality received a favourable outcome.
Ms Mqwebu said this showed that public funds were handled with diligence, integrity and in accordance with all relevant legislation.
She also emphasised that such performance needed to be maintained or improved upon as regression was not an option.
