Mentally ill Dududu teen is missing

The teenager was recently released from police custody after malicious damage to property charges were dropped against him after undergoing a mental assessment.

A teenager, Nzuzo Ngcobo (19) of Mjunundwini Ward in Dududu, was reported missing by his family after having been released from police custody recently.

He was in custody for several months after committing malicious damage to property in Scott Street last year. Since then, he has made many appearances in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court.

At the time of his initial arrest and throughout all the hearings he attended, he failed to recall personal details such as where he lived and who his family were. The court then arranged for him to undergo a mental assessment at Fort Napier hospital. He made a few subsequent court appearances while waiting for the report.

Once it arrived, the report disclosed that he was in fact mentally challenged and sought help. The state withdrew charges against him on May 18 and sent him to G J Crookes Hospital’s psychiatric ward for treatment.

“He was taken by police to the hospital in Scottburgh where he was handed over to his family to have him seen by the hospital psychiatrist,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

After he had been released, a neighbour spotted him walking along the Dududu main road at 1.30pm on May 22.

The father was informed telephonically, but when the family went to the main road to look for the teenager, he could not be found and has been missing since,” said Captain Pandarum.
