Scottburgh court sentences policeman for speeding

Siyabonga Cele was sentenced to six months' in prison or a fine of R12 000.

The strong message of “no one is above the law” is still being carried out by RTI teams across the province.

In KZN, the Park Rynie squad rid the streets of yet another reckless motorist – this time a Saps officer, Siyabonga Cele.

He was convicted in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court in May after being found guilty for speeding. When he was initially arrested, the Park Rynie RTI caught him travelling at 183km/h in a 120km/h zone, in violation of the National Road Traffic Act.

Cele was sentenced to six months’ in prison and was given an option of paying a fine of R12 000.

As per the KZN Department of Transport, the sentencing and conviction of this officer shows the public that RTI treats motorists equally.

“We are encouraged by the fact that RTI is achieving a 95% conviction rate through its exceptional execution of the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation,” said MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma.

“Importantly, our prosecutorial strategy has been strengthened by our enduring partnership with the National Prosecuting Authority and Saps.”
