#SardineSeason 2018: Search for sardines has started
The silver fish had been seen south of Mazeppa in the Eastern Cape.
It’s mid-June and there are promising signs that sardines could be on their way to our sunny shores.
This after recent sightings south of Mazeppa on the Eastern Cape coast about 210km away, yesterday (Thursday). The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board’s Mike Anderson-Reade said it is quiet in KZN but south of Mazeppa it is very busy, with sardines, mixed with other bait fish, sighted.

Each year in June or July when word gets out that the sards have been spotted, within minutes, crowds of frenzied human predators converge along the coastline to join gamefish, birds, sharks in a feeding frenzy.
When the sardines arrive it’s good news for anglers as there’s plenty of game fish around.

Mr Anderson-Reade said the water temperatures off KwaZulu-Natal are still too warm at this stage and need to drop to about 19 degrees.
“The flight yesterday looks very promising as there are shoals of sardines which are followed by many gannets. The next flight over the Eastern Cape shores will properly be done next Wednesday or Thursday,” he said.
Beach visitors take note that shark nets have not yet been removed from South Coast beaches.
